The Play

This last week I was a chaperon for my son's field trip with his class. We walked to the downtown Fox Theater to see a stage production of the Wizard of Oz. I was excited to be able to attend with him. This was the first time that I have been able to go with his class. It was planned far enough in advance, that I was able to be off from work.

It was an interesting experience walking with fourteen kindergarten children.; for the most part all of them were really good. My son and I brought up the rear of the group. I enjoyed being in the back walking to the theater because I was able to talk with him and two of his friends. They wanted to know how "old" I was. I told them I was really old because I just had a birthday. When I told them I was 43 they were not impressed. They said that wasn't old. It really made me feel really good!

The class enjoyed the performance. The hardest part was waiting for the show to begin. Once it did, the children were attentive and enjoyed the play. The kids had fun participating with the characters at different times during the performance. Afterwards some of the characters came out and let the kids take pictures with them.
The walk back to school from the theater was interesting. The same kids that were bouncing with energy on the way to the play were now dragging and wondering when we would be back at school. On the way there I had my son and two other boys around me most of the time; on the way back I had about seven of them. I had to keep stopping so that they would stay in front of me. I guess that is what happens with 5 and 6 year olds. I had a really good time with the his class and I hope I will be able to chaperon again.
When we got back to school, I was able to take him to lunch with me. We went to the hot dog stand across from the theater and had Daddy meet us there. It was a fun time and I am so glad that I took the time to do it. My son was happy and we made a some great memories!

What a cute little boy! I can picture some interested little boys asking how old you are and how polite to be unimpressed. When they can hide their shock, they are true gentlemen. Wow, that's a long walk, no wonder they were pooped on the way home. I bet they took good naps that day!

What a great "culture" for them to attend a play! That is an opportunity not many kindergartners get. I don't see the lion, was he too scarry? I see from the marquee Lily Tomlin's name - was she in it?

I have to comment about the age question. I look young for my age and my Son I guess is starting to pick up on it. Because one day on the way home from school (Pre-k) he asked me how old I was and then tells me that I look like a "Girl" not a "Mom". Needless to say he left me speechless. I really didn't know how to respond to that one. All I could do was laugh. BTW I'm only 33, but still... ha ha
